The Town of Bassendean recognised that young people without access to suitable supervisors or vehicles, were severely marginalised from participating in employment, training and leisure activities.
These issues were magnified when, in 2012 the Western Australian State Government increased the number of required supervised hours from 25 to 50.
In response, the Town’s Youth Service, Volunteer Centre, Library and with support from Swan Valley Rotary and Lotterywest, partnered to develop a pilot program seeking to address this need.
The Program model sought to pilot a ‘proof of concept’ to demonstrate that a consortium of community agencies could use technology to manage each partner’s participation, and automate most of the human elements required for it to run smoothly.
The Program has been under constant development since practical operations commenced in February 2016, and now offers supervised driving hours to over 100 young people within the region.
